April 2005 Archives

I saw these quotes the other day, had I had to share them with you.

OK, numbers one and two (thanks to Gavin Esler, Newsnight presenter...)

"The first door I knocked on, I was told to burn in hell. I felt things could only get better after that."
Tory candidate Lucille Nicholson in Easington, County Durham, where the Labour majority last time round was 21,949.

From a local councillor in County Wicklow commenting on a proposal to boost tourism by putting gondolas on a local lake: "The idea is well and good in theory, but tell me this: who is going to feed them?"

Ah... Gavin and your Quotes Of The Day... Thanks!

The last one comes from an interview with a local radio DJ. I've no idea where this was from, so I do apologise.

"One night, when I was at the controls, a record began to skip. Before I could react, the needle scraped across the entire song leaving me with "dead air", a DJ's worst nightmare. I grabbed the mike and shouted over the air, "All right, which one of you listeners at home just bumped your radio and made my record skip?" After my face saving joke, I played another song. A few minutes later the switchboard operator told me that three people had called to apologise."

To the Library!

Supposedly raspberries grow really well in Ohio.

I had no idea, until i went to the library and got a book about it. You know, if you don't go to the library for a while, you forget it exists. It's easy, since they aren't in shopping malls with huge signs reminding you to go. But every time I go, I think, "This is like the internet, except with real books. THE LIBRARY IS GREAT!" and then I forget again for a while. This time I am going to attempt to keep the cycle going by checking out new books every time I return some, so I don't forget.

At the library there are low-carb cookbooks, all kinds of specialty gardening books, and art books. Other books are available too. Fiction, non-fiction and Science Fiction. (Think I covered all the fiction related books there...)

So yeah, go to the library, seriously, they are so great. If you are of the mind that "reading is hard", I don't know why you like my site, but they have DVDs that you can check out for free too. I can't believe I'm writing about the library on my site, but dammit, I am.

Who Should You Vote For?

Who Should You Vote For?

Who should I vote for?

Your expected outcome:

Liberal Democrat

Your actual outcome:

Labour -12
Conservative -29
Liberal Democrat 50
UK Independence Party -20
Green 33

You should vote: Liberal Democrat

The LibDems take a strong stand against tax cuts and a strong one in favour of public services: they would make long-term residential care for the elderly free across the UK, and scrap university tuition fees. They are in favour of a ban on smoking in public places, but would relax laws on cannabis. They propose to change vehicle taxation to be based on usage rather than ownership.

New Jersey...

New Jersey, the most intelligent place on this planet, has gone for the tomato to be its official state vegetable. Despite the tomato being a well known fruit...

I couldn't make this up.

Transparent Screens

Some guy, I'm afraid I don't know his name, but he's creative - and I'm surprised that no-one's ever thought of this before... Anyway, he has made the transparent computer screen!

Not really, all he's done is take a photo of what is exactly behind his monitor and made it his desktop image. It looks really good and is very effective.

Here's a gallery of some other people who've done the same.
